SENIOR LIVING AND CARE FACILITIES

TRANSITIONAL CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS

LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA

OWNER: Life Improvement Transitional Centers

This 3 level, 500 bed, temporary housing facility for homeless single men, women, teens and families offers housing, rehabilitation and job training services all in one facility. The ground level incorporates street fronting retail that serves both as job training and income for the center. Other ground level spaces include classrooms, daycare, salon, counseling, exercise and a large dining/multi-purpose room ringed around a large central courtyard. At the center of the courtyard a symbolic sculptural fountain expresses the Center's mission which is about the "renewal of the human spirit".

Upper levels are segregated into wings by resident type with the women and family wing on the second floor and men and teens on the third floor. Other unique design features include private second level terraces with secure children's play area, outdoor smoking terraces on the third level as well as significant staff and recreation areas throughout the facility. The architectural design services for this project were provided pro-bono as the firm's contribution to aid the fight on homelessness.
